Today was a little better for me.
Finally caught a few.
Best one was 5.5# or better. Caught 2 more on a jig and one on a jerk bait. Lost one on a jig and shook one off.
Doug caught a 4#er on a trap.
Gonna be windy as all get out Saturday, hopefully it will hold up.
Will, can you post the pic? |

Found a point leading into a spawning pocket that had the "right" kind of grass on it Friday. Only caught one keeper there Friday, but felt sure it would hold fish.
It was the third place we hit Saturday and caught this one on.....what else, a Red Trap.
Found another good area Friday and caught 2 in the 4 pound range, but it got hammered all day Saturday. Managed 2 keepers there and my partner got his 8.65 3 fish fish limit there.
Our best 5 fish would have gone over 23 pounds.
I only had 3 fish that went 14.96 and finished 22nd out of 106 (one place out of the money).
But this one weighed 8.72 and got a check for that.
It took 23 pounds to will the Pro side and alomost 16 pounds for the co-angler side (3 fish!).
Big fish on the co-angler side was 9.07! |

Is the fish really that big, or is it just that HUGE picture?
Seriously...nice catch! Did your partner have a nine pounder too? That is what I heard. |

My partner and I both called it 7 pounds. But every time I checked the livewell I noticed how wide her back was. She was big.
Not my biggest fish, I'm pretty sure the one I caught last year at Hebert's "Cheater Pond" was bigger.
Also, caught a 8.75 on Lay several years ago.
No, my partner did not catch the 9.07. He had 3 that went 8.65.
He was a good partner. Nice guy from Clevevland, TN, he always threw something different than I was. I fished the red trap predominantly, and he threw a Long A. He even let me borrow one of his jerk baits that I caught my third keeper on. |

Strangely, no. While prefishing, I caught a 5.5 on a crankbait, the big one, two over 4, and 3 over 3# and none of them fought much at all.
I assumed it was the chilly water, but the medium heavy rod and 17# test handled them pretty well.
The big fish didn't show herself till she turned at the boat. By that time the net was in the water and I didn't have time to panic!
They all felt like I was dragging in a wet sweatshirt, every now and then you could feel a slight head shake.
Friday morning was the first time I caught anything worth mentioning on the trap in the grass. Been throwing it up there for years with no success.
Figured out a few tricks that made all the difference to me. |

There are some tricks to fishing the trap in the grass for success. What's the H2O temp up there? |
